Anointing of the Sick

anointingSickness and pain have always been a heavy burden for people. Catholics naturally suffer sickness and pain as do all people; yet our faith helps us to understand better the mystery of suffering and to bear our pain more bravely. From Christ’s own words we know that sickness has meaning and value for our own salvation and for the world as well. We also know that Jesus loved the sick and that during His life on earth He often looked upon the sick and healed them.

The Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, focuses on this healing power of Christ and His presence through the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of the Sick, for all those who are in need of physical healing and the strength of the Holy Spirit.

As you already know, special care has been given to those of our parish who are ill due to sickness or old age. The Sacrament of the Anointing is not a sacrament for the dead or the dying, but essentially a Sacrament for ALL Catholics who are seriously ill and open to reception of this Sacrament and not persisting in grave sin.
